Building a deck in White Rock: what's required
White Rock is direct about it: constructing, covering or enclosing a porch or sundeck requires a building permit. Plans are reviewed against the current BC Building Code and the City's own bylaws, and the permit is issued once they are accepted and fees and bonds are paid. On the steep streets above the beach, guard design and height come up early — we bring the drawings in ready for both.

POPULAR AROUND YOUBuilt for White Rock's Climate
Decking designed for year-round performance
White Rock faces due south over Semiahmoo Bay, and its decks live in the most sun and the saltiest air of anywhere PCC builds. That combination is hard on the wrong materials: UV bleaches cheap boards and marine air corrodes standard fasteners. We spec stainless or coated hardware, fade-stable surfaces, and glass guards that keep the view the hillside lots were bought for — most of our work here is a view deck first and everything else second.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions from homeowners, strata councils and property managers across the Lower Mainland. Don't see yours? Book a free assessment and we'll answer it on site.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in White Rock?
Yes — the City requires a building permit for constructing, covering or enclosing a porch or sundeck, with plans reviewed against the BC Building Code and the City's bylaws. We prepare and submit that set.
What does salt air do to a deck?
It corrodes standard fasteners and hardware years before the boards fail. Close to the water we spec stainless or specially coated hardware and detail the connections so salt-laden moisture cannot sit in them.
Can I keep my view and still meet the railing rules?
Yes. The BC Building Code sets the guard height — 900 mm, or 1,070 mm above 1.8 m — but not the material. Frameless or posted glass guards meet the rule and keep the bay in sight, and they are the most common choice on the hillside.
Do you work on the older beach-area homes?
Yes — West Beach and East Beach lots are compact and often stepped, so decks there are usually rebuilds that solve drainage and structure at the same time. Hillside and Uptown work is more often larger view decks.
