Building a deck in Port Moody: what's required

Port Moody's trigger is broader than the usual height rule: a permit is required for a deck more than 0.6 m (2 ft) above the ground OR one attached to a building — so an attached deck needs a permit whatever its height. A deck requiring a permit must also meet the setbacks that apply to the structure it is attached to under the Zoning Bylaw. Applications go through the City's eServices portal. Port Moody also publishes Good Neighbour Guidelines that ask you to think about a deck's effect on a neighbour's privacy and light, which on these tight treed lots is worth a conversation before the drawings.

Built for Port Moody's Climate

Decking designed for year-round performance

Port Moody sits at the closed end of Burrard Inlet with forest coming down to the houses, and it is one of the damper places we build. Inlet moisture plus heavy tree cover means a north-facing deck may not properly dry out between September and April. That is a materials conversation before it is a design one: vinyl waterproofing or capped composite hold up where a stained softwood deck will be back in the maintenance cycle within a couple of seasons.

Deck installation Questions, Answered.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Port Moody?

Probably — and the rule catches more projects than most. Port Moody requires a permit for a deck more than 0.6 m (2 ft) above the ground, or for any deck attached to a building. So an attached deck needs a permit regardless of how low it sits.

Does my Port Moody deck have to meet setbacks?

Yes. A deck that needs a permit must meet the setbacks applying to the structure it is attached to under the City's Zoning Bylaw. On the narrower treed lots that is often the constraint that shapes the design.

Why does Port Moody ask about my neighbours?

The City publishes Good Neighbour Guidelines asking you to consider how a new deck affects a neighbour's privacy or casts shade on their garden. It is guidance rather than a bylaw, but on Port Moody's close, treed lots it is worth thinking through before the drawings.

Which decking material suits Port Moody?

Something that copes with staying wet. At the head of Burrard Inlet with forest coming down to the houses, a north-facing deck may not properly dry out between September and April — vinyl waterproofing or capped composite hold up where stained softwood is back in the maintenance cycle within a couple of seasons.

Do you build decks in Heritage Mountain and Moody Centre?

Yes — we work across Port Moody, including Moody Centre, Heritage Mountain, Heritage Woods, College Park and Pleasantside.
