Building a deck in Maple Ridge: what's required

Maple Ridge publishes Residential Deck Application Guidelines and asks for two complete sets of plans — foundation plan, floor plan, cross sections and elevations. A legal survey certificate from a BC Land Surveyor has to be on site when you call the foundation 'Forms' inspection. The requirement that catches people out is septic: on a lot not connected to municipal sanitary sewer, Provincial Sewerage Regulation compliance must be confirmed before the permit is issued, so the City knows the deck will not compromise the existing system. On Maple Ridge's rural properties that is a real step, not a formality.

Built for Maple Ridge's Climate

Decking designed for year-round performance

Maple Ridge runs up into the foothills below Golden Ears, and it is the wettest place we regularly build. Heavy rainfall, real elevation change across a single property and dense tree cover make three demands at once: a structure that copes with slope, a surface that copes with sustained wet, and detailing that keeps organic debris from sitting on the boards. Rural lots also mean longer spans between supports than a suburban deck needs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Maple Ridge?

Yes — the City publishes Residential Deck Application Guidelines and requires two complete sets of plans: foundation plan, floor plan, cross sections and elevations.

I'm on a septic system — does that change anything?

Yes, and this is the requirement that most often catches people out in Maple Ridge. On a lot not connected to municipal sanitary sewer, compliance with the Provincial Sewerage Regulation has to be confirmed before the permit is issued, so the City knows the deck will not compromise the existing system. On rural lots this is a real step rather than a formality, and we plan for it.

Will I need a survey?

Yes — a legal survey certificate from a BC Land Surveyor must be on site when the foundation 'Forms' inspection is called.
